Key West’s Southernmost Marathon & Half Marathon joins MultiRace’s Growing Family of World Class Events

Dec 05, 2016

(MIAMI, FL, USA) November 30th – MultiRace is on the move again, announcing today that it has acquired The Southernmost Marathon and Half Marathon (“SoMo”). The race, which has grown into an annual event attracting over 1,100 participants from 47 states and 15 countries, packs a 26.2 mile course into a 2 x 4 mile island and four surrounding Keys.

“We are excited about welcoming SoMo as a member of our growing family of participatory events. As we continue to expand our reach, we felt that adding this important event in the Florida Keys was vitally important to our strategy” said Joe DaGrosa, Chairman of MultiRace. He added that “We look forward to preserving SoMo’s unique personality while helping to grow it into a world renowned event.”

SoMo began as a big idea on a small island at the Southernmost Point in the US.  Founders Bill Elkins and Liz Love were personal trainers and run coaches in Key West, FL, when the idea hit them.  The Florida Keys needed a marathon to highlight the beauty of the islands and the quirky characteristics of island life in Key West.

“We created this event as a grassroots labor of love utilizing local volunteer groups. We knew that we would eventually need a professional sports event organization to expand the race to accommodate the growing number of national and international runners who would like to experience racing in paradise” said Bill Elkins. “We found a perfect partner in MultiRace to not only grow SoMo, but to ensure that its quirky legacy is preserved for future runners” he added.
